Happy National Travel and Tourism week!
In the U.S, this week is National Travel and Tourism Week 2019, marking the 36th celebration of the contributions and accomplishments of the U.S. travel industry.
This year, the theme for one of the most celebrated weeks in the travel calendar is “Travel Matters”, recognising the innumerable ways in which travel enriches lives and strengthens communities.
So, lets delve into why tourism matters here at Natural World and how there are so many reasons to celebrate the travel industry in Kenya!
According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, it’s estimated that 20% of Kenya’s wealth comes from tourism, creating a major source of income into the Kenyan economy.
This is considered to be down to Kenya hosting Africa’s most popular safari destinations, with many natural attractions you won’t find anywhere else.
Throughout the National Parks and conservation areas, hotel staff, drivers, cooks, tour guides and more, are all needed when tourism is at its peak, providing new job opportunities for locals. This contributed to around 8.3% of all Kenya’s employment in 2018, equating to 1.1 million jobs.
The revenue from park fees, safari tours, camp fees, and local taxes often contribute to conservation work as well.
Kenya’s animals and landscapes are unique to the country, giving the government an incentive to protect them. As tourists pay for a safari experience, the government uses this income to protect their land, which in turn, gives visitors the safari they’ve dreamed of.
Alongside conservation areas, tourism has been put towards developing the country’s infrastructure. Projects such as hospitals, schools, and roads have improved the overall standard of living for locals, overall benefiting Kenyan culture and history.
At Natural World, we want our customers to have the chance to make a lasting impact on the community, contributing to the locals here in Kenya.
That’s why, we are proud members of Pack for a purpose, an initiative that allows travellers to make a positive impact on the lives of the local children and families.
By using some of your suitcase space to store supplies, such as stationary or clothing, you can make a massive difference to some of the local schools and children’s homes we work with.
