Picture an idyllic island with spacious white sandy beaches and a plethora of water activities, add to it the warm Indian Ocean and you would be describing the beautiful Diani Beach. Located on Kenya’s Mombasa coastline, the Diani region boasts a population of around a hundred thousand people and is one of the country’s most popular beach destinations. From kite surfing to snorkeling to simply relaxing on the beach, Diani Beach is popular with honeymooners, families and solo travelers alike. How to get to Diani beach paradise though?
Diani Beach is located approximately 20 miles south of the city of Mombasa, in Kwale County and around 300 miles south-east of Kenya’s capital city, Nairobi. Visitors have the option to fly directly into Mombasa off international flights from destinations in Europe and other parts of Africa, on airlines such as KLM, Lufthansa or Ethiopian Airlines.
Others may arrive off a short flight from Nairobi off domestic airlines such as Safarilink or Jambojet. Domestic airlines connect visitors from the bustling hub of the country’s capital or from one of the key safari destinations in Kenya such as the famous Masai Mara. These flights usually take an hour and depart mostly from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport and may land at either Mombasa Airport or the Ukunda Airstrip.
Travelers are then met and transferred to their Diani Beach resort to begin their adventure in paradise. It is rare that visitors will drive the extremely long distance from Nairobi to Diani Beach, a travel time that can take up to eight hours or longer.
Once guests arrive in Mombasa, they will be met by one of our friendly representatives and begin the approximately one-hour transfer south to the Diani area. The drive is along the A14 and brings guests to the Likoni Ferry, where a twenty-minute ferry ride across the Kilindini Port places them in Likoni. Back onto the A14 or as it’s also known, the Likoni-Ukunda Road, and onto the idyllic Diani Beach.
Traveling along the A14, visitors have a chance to see local children at play along the roadside, get a feel for the accommodations and small businesses set up en route, stop in at small kiosks selling food or cellphone airtime, or simply take in the colors and sounds around you. For those visitors who fly from the Masai Mara directly to the Ukunda Airstrip, the transfer to Diani Beach is short, usually only 12 minutes.
While most visitors who plan to spend time at any of the wonderful, relaxing and ideally-located points on Diani Beach will most likely be transferred by private vehicle, some guests may wish to self-drive while following the same. There are a handful of cruise ships that dock at Mombasa Port between the months of September and March, bringing guests to the vibrant and charming Kenyan East Coast. Once travelers disembark, they will be met and transferred in an air-conditioned vehicle to their Diani Beach resort.
