Gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda is one of the most sought-after travel experiences in the world. Whether you are visiting Volcanoes National Park or Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, gorilla trekking is an unforgettable adventure.
In order to make sure you are as prepared as possible for this adventure, it’s essential to pack the right gorilla trekking gear. The number one mistake many trekkers make is wearing the wrong clothing which can cause great discomfort and therefore detract from the extraordinary experience of seeing these magnificent creatures up close and in the wild.
Use a lightweight duffel as opposed to cumbersome rolling luggage; internal flights in Rwanda and Uganda have a weight limit of 33lbs. This means you must pack strategically.
It’s also a good idea to hire a porter to assist you during your gorilla trekking excursion. They are optional, but most trekkers find them to be essential for a successful trek. It’s best to get your own porter instead of sharing one. They cost just $15 a trek in Bwindi and it’s a great way to support the local community.
Here’s our tried and tested gorilla trekking packing list for Rwanda or Uganda.
Wear neutral colored, lightweight clothing on your gorilla trekking excursion. Avoid black and dark blue as these colors attract tsetse flies. Dress in layers and bring a sweater for early morning and nighttime game drives. Wear long sleeved shirts to keep the sun and insects off your skin.
A waterproof rain jacket, hiking boots with excellent treads, trekking pants, insect repellant with DEET, high SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, a daypack, and long socks are essential. Tucking your pants into your socks protects your ankles from fire ants, so don’t underestimate the importance of long socks! A sunhat and gardening gloves or hiking gloves are also recommended, as is a bandana for wiping your brow. It will also shield your camera from dust when necessary.
A waterproof backpack is not necessary, especially if you’re visiting Rwanda or Uganda during the dry season. But it’s also always a good idea to pack a few extra garbage bags. Take one and line your pack with it to protect your belongings against moisture.
It may be worth it to invest in a pair of waterproof hiking boots, such as those with GoreTex protection. After all, you are hiking through tropical rain forests. Even if the weather is dry, the ground could be wet and muddy. If you’ve done much hiking in the past, you know there are few things worse than cold, soggy feet. Flip flops are nice to slip on after you’re done with the trek.
Also, do not make the mistake of waiting to wear your brand new hiking boots until you reach your destination. Instead, complete multiple hikes at home in your new boots in order to break them in. Again, your feet will thank you!
Overall, keep in mind that you may be trekking for eight or so hours to locate a gorilla family so the proper attire is essential.

Don’t forget your camera on your gorilla trekking trip. Make sure it’s packed in a waterproof case that can be securely worn across your body while you hike. Mountain gorillas are very photogenic! It’s also a good idea to carry extra batteries, memory cards, lens cleaner, additional lenses, and any other accessories that keep your camera running as it should.
Power outages in Uganda and Rwanda are frequent but short-lived. You may want to consider bringing a power strip which will allow you to charge multiple items at once as well as a portable power source.
A small flashlight may also be useful during evenings at your lodge, as will a laptop for recording your experiences and downloading photos. If you prefer the old-fashioned method, just bring a paper journal and pen for taking notes. Chargers and adaptors are also recommended, and binoculars if you’re a birder or would simply like an up close view of the gorillas through a lense not attached to your camera.
The following list of items are optional items but ones which may come in handy. Keep in mind that you want to pack as light as possible since you may be trekking for several hours. The less weight, the easier the trek and the more you can concentrate on the goal.
Also note that in 2019, Uganda joined 40 other countries in Africa to ban single use plastic bags to protect the environment. So do not pack Ziplocks or other plastic bags in your suitcase as they will be confiscated at the airport. Find an eco-friendly alternative to plastic bags in which to tote your essentials on your trek.
Sticking to this packing list will ensure your gorilla trekking experience is as memorable, and comfortable, as possible.
