Location
The Lemek Conservancy is located in the northern part of the famous Masai Mara Game Reserve, one of Kenya’s premium safari destinations. The destination offers prime game viewing, located along the corridor used by the great migration as well as offering incredible night drives.
Size
Lemek Conservancy is around 30 square miles in size.
History
Locally owned by a group of Maasai landowners, the area now known as Lemek Conservancy was eventually taken over by the Koyaiki Group Ranch. The conservancy was established in 2009, comprising a small area of the Mara North.

Hours of Operation
The entrance gates to the Lemek Conservancy are open between 6am and 6pm daily.
By Road
Driving from Nairobi, the distance is between 140 miles and 190 miles, depending on which gate clients use to enter. The closest gate is Oloololo Gate and the drive from Nairobi will be around five to six hours along the B3 and C12.
By Air
Visitors can fly from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport into the Ngerende Airstrip, a flight that will take around 40 minutes.
Weather & Climate
The weather is wonderful during the dry, winter months between June and the end of August. The days are cool with temperatures around the 50s at night and up to 75 during the day, however, early mornings are fresh and cool with jackets, beanies and scarves a good idea to wear on game drives.
Once the sun goes down, the temperature drops, and while a little chilly, the evening skies are simply breathtakingly clear. The short rains fall between November and early January with the long, rainy season occurring in April and May.
Avoiding Crowds
Look to travel to the Lemek Conservancy between November and late March to avoid the busy safari season. The conservancy and Masai Mara Reserve in general are bustling with safari vehicles all in search of the teeming wildlife, sightings best during the drier months between June and September. Traveling outside these months will ensure your viewing is uninterrupted as there will be fewer game drive vehicles during this time.
Value for Money
The Lemek Conservancy offers a wonderful selection of well-priced safari accommodations as it is set outside the main Masai Mara traversing region. Spending time away from busy safari destinations will ensure value-for-money accommodation options.
Popular Wildlife Sightings in Lemek Conservancy
Some of the big five are known to frequent this area, so sightings of lion, leopard and elephant are high. The vast savannah sees plenty of plains game such as gazelle and zebra grazing in the area, with the Mara River providing an excellent source of water for thirsty wildlife.
If lucky enough to be in this region during the great wildebeest migration, sightings of thousands of wildebeest crossing between Kenya and Tanzania are an absolute highlight of any visit to this area.
The Terrain
Open grasslands make up most of the terrain in the Lemek Conservancy, with trees scattered along the Mara River. Undulating hills make game drives exciting, secret hiding spots naturally created by the lay of the land.
Game Drives
Game drives take place early in the morning and late afternoons, a three-hour incredible experience traversing the landscape in search of giraffes, zebra, lions, elusive leopards and so many more. Night drives in this area are spectacular, a chance to see nocturnal favorites such as porcupines, aardvarks and civets.

Cultural Villages
Community visits can be arranged for guests staying in the Lemek Conservancy, with options to embrace local culture and way of life, to hear stories of traditions, learn secret recipes and marvel at local Swahili song and dance.
Visiting Lemek Conservancy during the winter months between June and early September is an ideal time to get the most out of this wonderful section of the Masai Mara. Dry conditions with low grass make game viewing spectacular at this time.
There are only a handful of accommodation options in the Lemek Conservancy ranging in pricing from USD250 per person sharing per night for basic camping to a more luxury option presented at around USD1000 per person per night.
Traveling along the B3 and C12 from Nairobi, the drive to Lemek Conservancy will take between five to six hours. Visitors flying in from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport will take a 40-minute flight, flights landing at the Ngerende Airstrip.
The Lemek Conservancy is well-known for its fantastic night drives and its location in the Masai Mara means guests may be able to witness the great migration if they are visiting during July or October.
Visitors should look out for their favorite wildlife such as elephants, lion and leopards and stare in awe at the beauty of the gentle giraffe or grazing gazelle. Lemek Conservancy has a myriad of incredible wildlife.

Daily game drives conducted in the early morning or later afternoon are the best ways to witness the wonder of the landscape and wildlife in the Lemek Conservancy. Night drives are very popular in Lemek Conservancy and bush walks are a favorite activity too.
Saruni Wild, Mara River Camp and Losokwan Camp are a few of the wonderful and classic accommodations to be found in the area.
There are no stand-alone restaurants located in or near Lemek Conservancy. Guests will enjoy all their meals at their specific safari lodge or camp.
Other than incredible wildlife experiences mostly comprising game drives and bush walks, visits to local Masai communities, and getting to learn about their cultural traditions and modern way of life.
The best time to go gorilla trekking in Uganda is during the dry season (December– February and June - August) when conditions are especially good for trekking to view mountain gorillas. Game drives in the national parks are also fruitful during this time.
Wear neutral colored, lightweight clothing on your Uganda safari. Dress in layers and bring a warm sweater for morning and nighttime game drives. For gorilla trekking, bring a waterproof rain jacket, hiking boots, long socks, hiking pants, bug repellant, and a daypack. A sunhat and gardening gloves are also a good idea; the jungle is dense and thick.

When it comes to wildlife viewing, there are never any guarantees. There are no fences in the parks in Uganda and the gorillas are free to roam. They know their favorite spots to congregate and work closely with park officials each day to provide the best possible chance of seeing gorillas in the wild.
Most mountain gorillas in Uganda live at between 4,900 to 7,500 feet. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to the country’s mountain gorillas, has a high point of 8,550ft.
