Ekorian’s Mugie Camp can be described as an eco-friendly, luxury beach retreat, a haven set in the Mugie Wildlife Conservancy. Sustainability is key here and the Camp comprises a beautiful main area and exquisite accommodations, all supplied and decorated with local, organic, and natural materials.
Guests can relax in comfortable sofas in a small sitting area in the main tent, and dining takes place indoors on an exquisite dark-wood table or can be enjoyed around the pool deck. Home-cooked meals using fresh ingredients is the ethos of the chefs at Ekorian’s Mugie Camp, a small vegetable garden located on the property, is the perfect pantry.
There is a pleasant and inviting fresh water and chemical-free swimming pool located on the grounds, a short distance from the main area and on its private deck. Guests can enjoy some downtime relaxing by the pool or perhaps younger guests may wish to jump on the trampoline set amid a bushy landscape.
The Camp comprises six large tents scattered around the grounds, all classic in design and decor, offering views out onto the surrounding bush. There is a small gift shop where guests can purchase locally-made products which range from toiletries to gorgeous beadwork created by the women in the local community.
Guests traveling to Ekorian’s Mugie Camp will most likely travel on a scheduled flight from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta or Wilson Airport to the Loisaba Airstrip, a journey of around one hour. The drive to the Camp is then a 90-minute game drive, your first chance to spot the incredible wildlife in this area.
There is the option to take a private charter to Mugie Airstrip located a half-hour from the Camp. Those travelers who prefer to travel by road will have a journey of around six hours from Nairobi and four hours from Nanyuki.
Six private tents are set up on the grounds of Ekorian’s Mugie Camp, all comprising a wooden deck and the tented accommodation covered with a papyrus roof. The tents are classic safari tents with bedding that can be made up as a double room or twin-bedded, with neutral colors and touches of color a perfect blend seen in bedding and floor rugs. Each room has complimentary drinking water offered in recycled glass bottles. Each tent is en-suite with flush toilets, a vanity, and hot running water for the shower, with organic and locally-made products supplied in the toiletries neatly displayed in the bathroom. Guests can purchase these wonderful products in the gift shop when they leave.
Game drives both day and night are incredible at Ekorian’s Mugie Camp, the opportunity to see a wide variety of animals on the Conservancy, with guided game walks a chance to get up close and personal with the flora, fauna, and smaller creatures. Guests can enjoy fishing trips, kayaking, and bird-watching outings during their stay, or try something different such as a camel ride or spending a day at a nearby cattle ranch to witness the daily operations of the ranch.
Walking with bloodhounds who are out exercising or perhaps a leisurely game of golf at Mugie Golf Course, is how you’d like to spend your day. Traditional archery, an option of lawn games, spear throwing, and a jump on the netted trampoline are other fun activities on offer. No matter what you choose, there is an activity for every guest at Ekorian’s Mugie Camp.
The best times to visit Tanzania are December through March or June through October during the dry seasons, when the game viewing is at its best. The rains usually last from April to May then occur again in November when there are fewer tourists and vegetation flourishes. During February, wildebeest are calving, giving you a front row seat to the baby's first moments in the savannah.

Both countries are reputed for outstanding game viewing. Tanzania’s jaw-dropping Mount Kilimanjaro, sweeping coffee plantations and the exotic island of Zanzibar make it unique from its northern neighbor, while Kenya's lush green landscapes make it a bit less tropical, climate-wise. The two countries are frequently combined into a single journey, given their proximity to each other and the fact that they are both locations for the must-see Great Migration. The Great Migration is a wildlife spectacle, sometimes called The Greatest Show on Earth by safari enthusiasts, during which hundreds of wildebeest and other mammals head towards greener grazing pastures during East Africa's dry season. It is heavily dependent on the weather, specifically the rain which brings new vegetation upon which the wildebeest feed. Generally-speaking, herds are in the Serengeti from November to May. In May, as the grass dries up, herds begin the 500-mile migration north and by June they are in the greener plains of Kenya’s Maasai Mara. They usually stay here until October. From January on, they alternate between woodlands and plains, depending on the weather. In anticipation of the short rains—and the greener grasslands that come with it—the herds begin their trek down to the Serengeti. In November and December, they arrive to a flourishing green landscape where they stay until the cycle begins again.
The best time to go gorilla trekking in Uganda is during the dry season (December– February and June - August) when conditions are especially good for trekking to view mountain gorillas. Game drives in the national parks are also fruitful during this time.
Wear neutral colored, lightweight clothing on your Uganda safari. Dress in layers and bring a warm sweater for morning and nighttime game drives. For gorilla trekking, bring a waterproof rain jacket, hiking boots, long socks, hiking pants, bug repellant, and a daypack. A sunhat and gardening gloves are also a good idea; the jungle is dense and thick.

Be prepared to hike for multiple hours through uneven terrain at high altitude. It is advisable to train before any gorilla trekking trip by walking uphill, or better yet, by taking day hikes.
When it comes to wildlife viewing, there are never any guarantees. There are no fences in the parks in Uganda and the gorillas are free to roam. They know their favorite spots to congregate and work closely with park officials each day to provide the best possible chance of seeing gorillas in the wild.
Most mountain gorillas in Uganda live at between 4,900 to 7,500 feet. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to the country’s mountain gorillas, has a high point of 8,550ft.
