Boasting 88 luxury rooms set above the ground and offering private views over the surrounding wilderness, the Voi Wildlife Lodge is a wonderful option to consider when planning a safari to Kenya’s Tsavo East National Park. The property is large, set out among a garden with views over tree-scattered plains, and offers excellent service throughout one’s stay.
The Reception is spacious with high, thatched, and beamed ceilings. The Tembo restaurant is spacious and open on the side, covered in thatch and offering individual dining tables, while the simple yet comfortable sitting area also opens up to an outside area, both overlooking a nearby watering hole.
Facilities at Voi Wildlife Lodge include beauty and massage treatments, the Spa Center equipped with five treatment rooms, a steam bath, and a hot tub. There is a games room, children’s playground, and a desk where guests can plan any activities they may wish to enjoy during their stay. Fun activities such as table tennis, volleyball, and badminton are available at Voi Wildlife Lodge.
Guests have the option of enjoying a drink either at the inside bar or next to the inviting swimming pool, the waterhole close by so guests can cool down while watching animals do the same or grab a drink, a short distance away.
Located just 100 miles away from the coastal city of Mombasa, the Voi Wildlife Lodge can be easily combined with a beach escape after some time on safari in the fantastic Tsavo East National Park. The Tsavo East airstrip is located a five-minute drive from the Lodge with flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport a journey of around 90 minutes. Driving from Nairobi will take around four hours and from Mombasa, the drive is approximately two hours long.
The Voi Wildlife Lodge offers 88 luxury and large rooms, all boasting a private balcony with commanding views over the vast savannah landscape of the Tsavo East National Park. A huge water hole is located nearby, offering the chance to watch animals come down to drink any time of the day.
Of the 88 room complements, there are 16 Standard Double rooms with a queen-sized bed and 48 Superior Rooms which have two double beds plus one single bed in the room. All rooms have a kitchenette with a dishwasher included. The 24 Luxury Suites have two king beds set up with a sitting area and writing desk.
The rooms are sparsely decorated with comfortable wooden beds and subtle colours, the tiled floors offering a cooling effect in the room. The beds have a mosquito net over them, there is a place to hang clothing, and fresh water is available in the room on arrival. Every room is en-suite with a double vanity and a bath with an overhead shower.
Embarking on early morning or late afternoon game drives in 4×4 vehicles is the best way to experience the wilderness and wildlife in the Tsavo East National Park. There is the option to do bush walks with a qualified guide and spend time bird watching with a birding specialist.
For something different, guests can pay a visit to the Kasigau volcanic outcrop, a dramatic scene set amid a safari-focused landscape. Visits to a local cultural village are available to guests staying at Voi Wildlife Lodge, a chance to experience the traditions and culture of the Masai tribes.
The best times to visit Tanzania are December through March or June through October during the dry seasons, when the game viewing is at its best. The rains usually last from April to May then occur again in November when there are fewer tourists and vegetation flourishes. During February, wildebeest are calving, giving you a front row seat to the baby's first moments in the savannah.

Both countries are reputed for outstanding game viewing. The Great Migration is a wildlife spectacle, sometimes called The Greatest Show on Earth by safari enthusiasts, during which hundreds of wildebeest and other mammals head towards greener grazing pastures during East Africa's dry season. It is heavily dependent on the weather, specifically the rain which brings new vegetation upon which the wildebeest feed. Generally-speaking, herds are in the Serengeti from November to May. In May, as the grass dries up, herds begin the 500-mile migration north and by June they are in the greener plains of Kenya’s Maasai Mara. They usually stay here until October. From January on, they alternate between woodlands and plains, depending on the weather. In anticipation of the short rains—and the greener grasslands that come with it—the herds begin their trek down to the Serengeti. In November and December, they arrive to a flourishing green landscape where they stay until the cycle begins again.
The best time to go gorilla trekking in Uganda is during the dry season (December– February and June - August) when conditions are especially good for trekking to view mountain gorillas. Game drives in the national parks are also fruitful during this time.
Wear neutral colored, lightweight clothing on your Uganda safari. Dress in layers and bring a warm sweater for morning and nighttime game drives. For gorilla trekking, bring a waterproof rain jacket, hiking boots, long socks, hiking pants, bug repellant, and a daypack. A sunhat and gardening gloves are also a good idea; the jungle is dense and thick.

Be prepared to hike for multiple hours through uneven terrain at high altitude. It is advisable to train before any gorilla trekking trip by walking uphill, or better yet, by taking day hikes.
When it comes to wildlife viewing, there are never any guarantees. There are no fences in the parks in Uganda and the gorillas are free to roam.
