When you arrive at Mombasa’s port you disembark into a multicultural city of beautiful sights, bustling sounds and distinctive scents all highlighted by traditional flare and flavour. Visitors arriving by sea will be met with a warm welcome from the Natural World Kenya Safari local team, who will walk you to your jeep and ensure your Mombasa and Kenyan adventure begins from the moment you arrive. Whether stopping off for just the day or arriving in Mombasa port as the start to your East African safari, your welcome will be as warm as the weather and the Indian Ocean you sailed in on.

Named the largest port in East Africa, the port of Mombasa is located at the site of the deep-water inlet of the Kilindi Harbour. A destination rich in history that dates back to the days when Arabian Dhows would rest at the Old Port, a prequel to the presence of the great Portuguese discoverer, Vasco da Gama. As the heyday of the famous Spice Route unfolded, trade in these sought-after goods thrived, putting the Mombasa Port on the map.
After the colonization of Tanzania in the late 1890s, the trade industry was vibrant and bustling requiring the establishment of a larger railway system. Other than spices, rich commodities such as sugar, coffee and tea were transported in great quantities and are still are to this day. Mombasa Port is a key destination for over 30 shipping lines and boasts connectivity to over 80 seaports around the world.
The Mombasa Port remains a key destination for receiving goods that are transported to various inland countries such as Rwanda, Uganda and neighboring Tanzania. The port also caters to various leisure cruise liners that dock at Mombasa Port several times a year. Between September and March, large cruise liners such as the Norwegian Dawn, MSC Poesia and MS Ambience as well as the more boutique ships such as the Seabourn Sojourn and Hapag-Lloyd’s MS Europa bring guests to Kenya’s east coast.
Visitors arriving off cruise ships are left in awe of the capacity of the port. With 19 deep-water berths and 5 container berths, the size is impressive. The Mombasa Port’s Cruise Terminal is a large building painted white and brown and comprising three levels offering restaurants, lounges, duty-free stores and even conference facilities. Visitors are welcomed by a group of local dancers performing traditional dance and song, and the Immigration and customs procedures run smoothly.
Travellers have the option then to embark on shore experiences which may include visiting the old town and market of Mombasa or taking in the historical and UNESCO site of Fort Jesus, its humble fortifications full of tales and architectural charm. Arrange for a camel ride or a fly-in Safari. You may wish to spend the day on the beach soaking up the East African sun, enjoy some snorkelling, embark on a traditional Dhow cruise or taste the incredible local cuisine.
You can join our excursions or a safari in East Africa just minutes after disembarking from your cruise. Natural World Kenya Safaris will be there port side, ready to welcome you and get your Mombasa journey started. There is plenty of time to enjoy a short day trip while you either wait to board your ship or start your Kenyan land itinerary by embarking on a one-day, two-day, or three-day safari. The port of Mombasa is an exciting alternative to entering Kenya and exploring the surrounding coastline and safari destinations in this incredible country.

The best time to go gorilla trekking in Uganda is during the dry season (December– February and June - August) when conditions are especially good for trekking to view mountain gorillas. Game drives in the national parks are also fruitful during this time.
Wear neutral colored, lightweight clothing on your Uganda safari. Dress in layers and bring a warm sweater for morning and nighttime game drives. For gorilla trekking, bring a waterproof rain jacket, hiking boots, long socks, hiking pants, bug repellant, and a daypack. A sunhat and gardening gloves are also a good idea; the jungle is dense and thick.
Natural World Kenya Safaris offers Gorilla Trekking Safaris in Uganda with basic accommodations starting at $96 per person, per day, plus the Uganda gorilla trekking permit which costs $700 per person per day (the permits are required, and those fees are non-negotiable.) Costs increase from there.
Natural World Safaris can provide basic, mid-range, and luxury trekking safaris and is eager to work with almost any budget.
Suggested tips range from $10 to $20 per person per day for a private guide and the same amount for your driver if that is a different person than your guide.
If you are on a guided safari or gorilla trek in Uganda, your chances of encountering problems are minimal. However, it is always a good idea to take precautions on your safari, particularly when traveling through urban areas or in regions close to the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The trek to spot gorillas can be strenuous. It could take anywhere from two to eight hours to find and observe the gorillas, depending on the time of year. Be prepared to hike for multiple hours through uneven terrain at high altitude. It is advisable to train before any gorilla trekking trip by walking uphill, or better yet, by taking day hikes.
When it comes to wildlife viewing, there are never any guarantees. There are no fences in the parks in Uganda and the gorillas are free to roam. However, our expert guides and gorilla trackers have years of experience taking guests to see these magnificent creatures. They know their favorite spots to congregate and work closely with park officials each day to provide the best possible chance of seeing gorillas in the wild.
Most mountain gorillas in Uganda live at between 4,900 to 7,500 feet. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to the country’s mountain gorillas, has a high point of 8,550ft.
The best time to go on a gorilla trek in Rwanda is during the dry season (June - September) when conditions are best for trekking to view the country’s highlight: the fascinating mountain gorillas.
Wear neutral colored, lightweight clothing on your Rwanda gorilla trek. Dress in layers and don’t forget a sweater for chilly morning and nighttime game drives. For gorilla trekking, bring a waterproof rain jacket, broken-in hiking boots, long socks, hiking pants, bug repellant, and a daypack. A sun visor and protective gloves – such as gardening gloves - are also useful.
Natural World Kenya Safaris offers Gorilla Trekking Safaris in Rwanda with basic accommodations starting at $720 per person, per day, plus the Rwanda gorilla trekking permit which costs $1,500 per person per day (the permits are required, and those fees are non-negotiable.) Costs increase from there.
Natural World Safaris can provide basic, mid-range, and luxury trekking safaris and is eager to work with almost any budget.
Suggested tips for your guide are $25 per person, per day for a private guide and the same amount for your driver if that is a different person than your guide.
Rwanda is one of the safest countries in Africa, particularly if you are on a guided safari or gorilla trek. Your chances of encountering problems are minimal. However, it is always a good idea to take precautions on your safari, particularly when traveling through urban areas. Cross-border travel into the Democratic Republic of the Congo or Burundi is not safe, however, so steer clear of this.
