Location
Located in Northern Kenya, the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy boasts a wonderful location that incorporates the dense and beautiful Ngare Ndare Forest. Wildlife is plenty with unique species such as the Grevy’s Zebra and Statungas as well as the rarely spotted Black Rhino, a delight for any visitor to see.
Size
The Lewa Conservancy is around 97 square miles in size.
History
Established in 1995, the Lewa Wildlife Sanctuary is a wonderful example of key conservation in Kenya’s safari regions. The Conservancy is noted to be within a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has a great focus on rhino conservation and anti-poaching.
Entrance Fees & Permits
Entrance fees into Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is USD 126 per adult for guests staying over at one of the lodges or camps in the Conservancy. Day visitors will pay USD 198 per person.
Hours of Operation
The gates to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy are open between 7am and 6pm daily.
By Road
Getting to Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is a four-hour drive from Nairobi along the Thika Road, passing through the villages of Makuyu and Karatina.
By Air
Visitors who prefer to fly into Lewa Conservancy can fly with SafariLink from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to Lewa Downs, a 35-minute flight. There are also private or charter flight options where guests will land at the Lewa Airstrip.
Weather & Climate
To avoid the rainy season which falls between March and May, it is advisable to visit the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy during the dry, winter months between June and September. The days are mild, with brilliant, clear night skies and game viewing is at its best.
Avoiding Crowds
Visitors can consider traveling to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy during the quieter months of late May into early June, October and November before the short rains start or during January and February. Birdwatching is brilliant at this time of year.
Value for Money
With only a few lodges located within the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, the focus on value will come in the form of a more secluded and private safari experience. There will be fewer vehicles traversing the land within the conservancy and accommodation is mostly intimate and luxurious.

Game Drives
Game drives will take place in the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy mostly early in the morning just before sunrise and late afternoon where a breathtaking African sunset can be enjoyed. Game drives take place mostly in enclosed 4×4 safari vehicles.

Ngare Ngare Forest Waterfalls
Guests can visit the incredible waterfalls that flow in thin lines down into an aqua pool of water below. Beautiful walks through vibrant greenery surrounded by nature.
Activities
Horse and camel rides are available to guests staying in the area, as well as the incredible opportunity to see the wilderness and wildlife from above when embarking on a hot air balloon ride before sunrise.
The dry winter season including the months between June and early September is the best time to visit Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. The grass is low and game viewing at its best.
Accommodation options range from around USD 400 to USD 1300 per person sharing per night. All meals plus game drives and all transfers are included in the costs.
Guests driving from Nairobi can expect a drive of around four hours while guests who choose to fly in will depart Nairobi’s Wilson Airport on a flight of 35 minutes, landing at the Lewa Downs Airstrip.
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy has a picturesque landscape and is home to a large number of black rhinos and Greyv’s Zebra with a very successful breeding program.
Wildlife sightings include plains game such as gazelle, giraffes and the unique and endangered Greyv’s Zebra, Black Rhinos and Sitatungas. Predators such as lions and leopards can be spotted too with wandering elephants always a delight to spot in the distance and close up.
The gates of Lewa Wildlife Conservancy are open between 7am and 7pm daily.

When it comes to wildlife viewing, there are never any guarantees. There are no fences in the parks in Uganda and the gorillas are free to roam. They know their favorite spots to congregate and work closely with park officials each day to provide the best possible chance of seeing gorillas in the wild.
Most mountain gorillas in Uganda live at between 4,900 to 7,500 feet. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to the country’s mountain gorillas, has a high point of 8,550ft.
