Samburu National Park is considered one of Kenya’s key safari destinations due to its size, opportunities for animal and bird sightings, and its popularity from being the setting for the well-known book “Born Free”. Samburu’s popularity ensures that accommodations will be near the reserved, but will require booking in advance.

Sarova Shaba Game Lodge is located in a natural oasis in the heart of the Shaba Game Reserve or “Born Free Country” that Joy and George Adamson called home for many years.
Noted to be one of the first game lodges to be established in the Samburu Game Reserve, the Samburu Game Lodge has been welcoming and serving guests since 1962. It offers a wonderful combination of classic African safari feel combined with subtle luxury, set on grounds that often see anything from antelope to elephant roaming along the river’s edge. Guests can sit in the comfortable open lounge or sip a drink at the Crocodile Bar, with wonderful views over the river on offer. Perhaps step up into the Vulture Bar which is set in a tree commanding endless views over the Reserve.
The main area of the Lodge is impressive with tall wooden-beamed ceilings in the reception and dining areas. Guests can enjoy time lazing by the large, glistening swimming pool, its red umbrellas offering a splash of color to the surrounding greens and browns. There are also spa treatments on the menu or perhaps guests would like to spend some time browsing the souvenir shop. The property is large, offering 61 spacious thatched cottages.
An ideal setting amid river breezes and leafy forested wilderness, the Samburu Intrepids Tented Camp offers a classic African luxurious stay in one of Kenya’s key safari locations. A tranquil pool invites guests to relax in between game drives, the cool colors complimenting the dark wooden beams of the dining and lounge areas of the main camp area.
Located in the heart of the Samburu Game Reserve lies the Soroi Larsens Camp, a boutique-style safari experience named in honor of explorer Eric Larsen. The spot where Mr. Larsen first pitched his one-man tent, now hosts 16 privately-spaced luxury tents. Offering guests breathtaking views over the Ewaso Nyiro River guaranteed each morning. The camp is set within a lush lawn around 65 feet from the river so the restaurant, lounge and bar offer wonderful views at every mealtime. The main area is covered in a large, classic tent offering style and comfort to guests with plush sofas truly inviting, and coffee tables set with literature for those who want to sit and read for a while.
The beautiful swimming pool reflects images of trees nearby as well as the exquisite stonework paving around it. There is a large deck just off the dining area where guests can enjoy meals as well as congregate around a crackling fire pit after dinner, sharing tales of their day on safari with other guests. There is a small gift shop and spa treatments to choose from, as well as a jacuzzi and in case of emergencies, a medical center on site.
Located in the heart of the Kalama Community Conservancy, on the edge of the Samburu Game Reserve, the Saruni Samburu Lodge is an intimate and eco-focused lodge comprising only six villas. The setting is spectacular, the villas built among rocks and the entire property boasting breathtaking views over the Kalama Conservancy and out to Mount Kenya in the distance. The elevated position of the lodge lends itself beautifully to the gorgeous infinity pool, a highlight attraction at the Lodge.
The restaurant comprises one common table and the sitting area offers comfortable sofas to lounge on, the entire main public area is beautiful in classic African design and decor. Set along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River in the Buffalo Springs National Reserve, Elephant Bedroom Camp is a small, private camp offering a quality, luxury safari experience in an intimate setting. Located near the popular Samburu National Reserve, the surrounding scenery is captivating with winding river frontage and Mt. Kenya as one of Elephant Bedroom Camp’s beautiful backdrops.
The best time to go gorilla trekking in Uganda is during the dry season (December– February and June - August) when conditions are especially good for trekking to view mountain gorillas. Game drives in the national parks are also fruitful during this time.
Wear neutral colored, lightweight clothing on your Uganda safari. Dress in layers and bring a warm sweater for morning and nighttime game drives. For gorilla trekking, bring a waterproof rain jacket, hiking boots, long socks, hiking pants, bug repellant, and a daypack. A sunhat and gardening gloves are also a good idea; the jungle is dense and thick.

Be prepared to hike for multiple hours through uneven terrain at high altitude. It is advisable to train before any gorilla trekking trip by walking uphill, or better yet, by taking day hikes.
When it comes to wildlife viewing, there are never any guarantees. There are no fences in the parks in Uganda and the gorillas are free to roam. However, our expert guides and gorilla trackers have years of experience taking guests to see these magnificent creatures. They know their favorite spots to congregate and work closely with park officials each day to provide the best possible chance of seeing gorillas in the wild.
Most mountain gorillas in Uganda live at between 4,900 to 7,500 feet. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to the country’s mountain gorillas, has a high point of 8,550ft.
