Arriving in the town of Mombasa transports visitors to a coastal paradise and a welcome as warm as the Indian Ocean. Enjoyment begins from the moment you step off your flight to Mombasa’s Moi International Airport. Once you have made your way through customs and immigration, baggage claim is your next stop. From there it’s through the doors of the arrivals hall and time for you to step aboard your transfer vehicle, a smooth and quick experience.
The airport is Kenya’s second largest and is located in Mombasa County, approximately 11 miles from the center of Mombasa, with an easy connection to beach resorts and nearby safari lodges. The Mombasa airport is by no means ‘fancy’, but it is neat and clean in its simplicity, with comfortable sitting areas, WiFi, currency exchange options, ATMs, baggage storage facilities and assistance for physically challenged travelers.
There are two lounges, the Safari Comfort Lounge and Safari VIP Lounge. Places to eat include Airport Java House and Rafiki Cafe. Visitors can pop into the Natural Lamu shop for curious and gifts, visit a pharmacy if required, or pick up a local cell phone sim card at the Safaricom stand.
One of the key pluses of arriving at the Mombasa airport is its size. While the airport is noted as an international airport, it is smaller than most international airports worldwide and therefore easy to navigate. The airport staff complement is bountiful, so every guest’s needs are taken care of. The airport lies approximately 200 feet above sea level and comprises two runways, runway 1 is around 11 000 feet while runway 2 is approximately 4000 feet in length.
There are two terminals located at the Mombasa Airport, Terminal 1 serving international arrivals and Terminal 2 houses the domestic arrivals and departure halls. The airport sees around 20 international flights come in daily, flown on airlines such as Eurowings, Condor and Neos arriving from Europe, and Ixamen from China. Carriers such as Qatar and Kenya Airways connect Mombasa with the Middle East. Flights from outside Kenya arrive at Terminal 1. Airlines such as Kenya Airways, British Airways and Emirates connect many from Mombasa to key destinations in other parts of Africa, the UK and UAE via Nairobi land at Terminal 2.
One of the most popular routes within Kenya is the journey from the famous safari reserves and parks to the coastal gem of Mombasa. A ‘sun & safari’ is the perfect way to experience the incredible beach and bush experiences destinations in Kenya. Connections through Nairobi can see visitors out on a game drive in the morning and lazing on a pristine beach in the late afternoon.
Famous parks such as Amboseli Game Reserve and Masai Mara Game Reserve use airlines like SafariLink and Kenya Airways to transport clients, via Nairobi’s Wilson Airport, to Moi International Airport. Once you have made your way through baggage claim and into the arrivals hall, you are met by a representative and taken by a luxury vehicle to the accommodation of your choice.
Spending time on the idyllic beach of Diani, soaking up the sun on laid-back Mombasa beach or the surfing haven of Nyali Beach is the ideal way to end a classic East African safari. Guests to the area have a chance to enjoy both the tranquility of a beach destination with incredible weather and a destination that offers outstanding water activities such as snorkeling, diving, surfing and dolphin-watching adventures. Boutique guest houses, modest family beach hotels and larger beach resorts line Kenya’s east coastline offering a variety of accommodation options to suit every visitor’s wish list.
The town of Mombasa is approximately 25 minutes away so be sure to give yourself enough time to get to the airport to check in on time for your outbound flight.
