Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport not only proudly serves the city of Nairobi but acts as a connection point to many East African destinations. This is a true central hub connecting visitors and business travellers alike. JKIA, as it’s known to many, is located in the suburb of Embakasi which lies around 12 miles outside the central business area of Nairobi. The Nairobi airport is named after the country’s first President, Jomo Kenyatta and is known as one of Africa’s busiest airports, connecting travelers to countries such as Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, South Africa, and more.

Terminal 1 & Terminal 2

There are two terminals located at Nairobi International Airport. Terminal 1, the largest, is set out in a semi-circle design and divided into five sections. International airlines will land at terminals 1A, 1B, 1C and 1E while 1D services arrivals and departures of domestic travelers arriving and departing with Kenya Airways and its subsidiary, Jambojet. Terminal 1A is the biggest and busiest with a capacity to handle over two million passengers. There are around 30 check-in counters, approximately 12 departure gates and five baggage carousels.

Terminal 2 is a lot smaller and services a few of Kenya’s low-cost carriers, usually associated with the country’s safari circuit.

Facilities and Services Inside Nairobi Airport

Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport has travelers’ comfort and convenience in mind, with ample seating scattered around the terminal, a few plug-in power outlets to charge devices and restrooms situated a convenient distance apart. There are retail stores, duty-free bargains, and restaurants such as Amaica and Hardees for visitors to enjoy and to ensure passengers’ needs are always met.

Lounges & Airlines

Passengers can also relax, enjoy delicious food and freshen up at either the Simba Lounge or Pride Lounge in Terminal A1 which services Kenya Airways’ Premier World and SkyTeam’s Sky Priority passengers. The Aspire Lounge in Terminal 1B is wonderful as is the Turkish Airlines lounge located in Terminal 1C. For travelers flying with Jambojet, Terminal 2 has the charming Mara Lounge and Mount Kenya Lounge, both located airside and open 24 hours.

There is a second runway in the pipeline for NBO, the airline code for the Nairobi International Airport, which may help with any overflow from the many airlines that land there daily. Airlines from over 50 countries fly into Nairobi International Airport which includes European Airlines such as Air France, KLM, Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines. In contrast, well-known carriers such as Emirates and Qatar have frequent flights to Nairobi. African Airlines include Egypt Air, Air Tanzania, Air Mauritius, Ethiopian Airways, South African Airways among other East and Southern African carriers. British Airways, China Air and Air India are also international airlines that fly guests to Nairobi International Airport.

One of the main reasons visitors flock to Kenya is to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime safari experience. The thrill of spending time in the African wilderness and witnessing wildlife wandering open savannahs and forested areas is an adventure like no other. Nairobi International Airport is the perfect gateway to Kenya’s incredible safari circuit, with visitors arriving either early in the morning and transferring to nearby Wilson Airport to fly to the Masai Mara or Amboseli, Tsavo East and West, and others.

Destination: Nairobi & Beyond

Guests arriving later in the day will get to experience Nairobi and all its charm, culture and vibrance for a night, before jetting off or enjoying a long drive to any of the national game parks and reserves, accessible from Nairobi. The closest safari park is Nairobi National Park, located a thirty-minute drive away from Nairobi International Airports. Visitors can arrive in the morning and be driving through the African bush in the late afternoon.

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is accessible along the A109 highway or ‘Mombasa Road’ and visitors can also connect to downtown Nairobi on the new 2022 expressway. There are options to take the Number 34 bus or on the Nairobi Commuter Rail Network, however, most international visitors will be met at the airport upon arrival and transferred to their hotel, a warm, Swahili welcome waiting for all who travel through Nairobi International Airport.
