Zanzibar. You have experienced the ultimate in Tanzania’s beaches, now check out its ultimate national park, Nyerere. It’s a quick flight to this immense reserve, so vast, it’s larger than some 70 countries!

The park’s awesome expanse offers so much to its visitors – lots of space for its great numbers of wildlife and at the same time, it remains fairly untouched by human presence.

All the big cats and big game are here, plus dozens of varieties and surprises like its large population of African wild dogs. Rare elsewhere, but not here, over the vast spaces of Tanzania’s biggest park.

The Largest River

Everything about Nyerere National Park is big, even its main waterway, the Rufiji River, is the largest in Tanzania. This great artery is the center of a network of channels, swamps, and lakes that form a massive ecological system. It’s also home to vast numbers of hippos and crocodiles.

During the park’s dry season from June through October, the great abundance of water pouring through from the Rufiji is the sustenance for the park’s thirsty predators and grazers. This makes for easy and varied game viewing for lucky safari-goers.

We’ve mentioned the massive amount of wildlife inhabiting Nyerere but the actual numbers are stunning: 4,000 lions, 35,000 zebras… 145,000 buffalos. Plus masses of hartebeests, waterbucks, elands, monkeys, and the aforementioned African wild dogs.
