You love exploring fantastic destinations, off the beaten path – that’s how you discovered the balmy shores of Zanzibar. Well here’s another destination most don’t yet know that offers incredible wildlife rewards for those who safari to its vast forests and grasslands – Nyerere National Park.

This is a new park, created from the immense Selous Game Reserve. Here you’ll find the largest home in Africa for a wonderful variety of big and small games… but in numbers that are simply astonishing.

The vast park supports 4,000 lions, 3,500 hyenas, 1,000 leopards, and hundreds of cheetahs. Plus hundreds of thousands of buffalos, wildebeests, and the largest population of hippos in the world, over 40,000!

And yet, because Nyerere remains fairly undiscovered, the wildlife here is not as exposed to humans as they are elsewhere. This is one park where the animals vastly outnumber the safari-goers.

You Will Spot Lots of Wildlife

Not just because of their great numbers but the park’s geography plays a significant role in the wildlife’s survival and your access to them. The beating heart of Nyerere is also the largest river in Tanzania, the great Rufiji, which is the primary source of water.

It’s here during the dry season from June through October that so many of the animals gather to slake their thirst.  On these riverbanks, we’ll be looking for rhino, giraffe, eland, zebra, impala, monkeys, waterbuck, and so many more.

The river is also home to huge numbers of crocodiles and hippos, as well as one of the largest mangrove forests in the world.

A Dramatic Park To Witness

With its vast system of lakes and waterways, its acacia-adorned hills, riverine forests, and green rolling grasslands, Nyerere is a stunning and bountiful park to behold.

The final colorful flourish – the reserve’s hundreds of bird species dressing up the lakes, trees, and sometimes the wildlife – it is not uncommon to see a bright songbird resting upon the back of a rhino or antelope. Look for the purple-crested turaco, trumpeter hornbill, and fish eagle amongst others.
