In just one magical day, we’ll fly you from the beaches of Zanzibar to the amazing Nyerere National Park, Tanzania’s largest reserve and home to incredible numbers of wildlife.
Perhaps you haven’t heard of this park, the largest in Africa and one of the largest in the world. How can that be? Well, the park itself, only came into being in 2019. It was carved out from the even larger Selous Game Reserve.
Being a fairly new reserve, Nyerere is still not that well-known amongst the safari touring community so you’ll have more of this big park and its rivers of wildlife to yourself.
The Rufiji River
This imposing waterway cuts through the park and is quite literally its lifeblood – where the masses of local wildlife gather during the dry season from June through October for its sustaining waters.
What sort of big game can you expect to see on your day-long safari through the park? Let’s start with the big cats like lions, leopards, and cheetahs. Then come the elephants, buffalo, rhino, giraffe, zebra, and wildebeest.
Ready for more? The park hosts vast numbers of bushbuck, hartebeest, eland, spotted hyenas, vervet monkeys, and waterbuck. But of special note, Nyerere Park supports a population of over 1,300 African wild dogs, the greatest number in Africa. These fascinating creatures can be spotted moving in packs, some individuals attaining speeds of over 40 miles per hour.
The Habitats
During your safari here you’ll travel through the reserve’s many habitats of acacia hills, woodlands, riverine forests, swamps, and open grasslands. All support a variety of wildlife and bird types – over 445 species. Near the lake areas, we’ll be looking for kingfishers, pelicans, and African skimmers. And by the river banks, we’re sure to find ibis, vultures, storks, and hornbills, along with other water birds to mark this special safari.
Your Fly-In Safari
In just an hour’s flying time, we will transport you from your beach paradise in Zanzibar to an equally enchanting world of undisturbed animals in astounding numbers.
Your Natural World Kenya Safaris driver/guide will be with you from the time you touch down at the airstrip near the park to the moment you bid farewell. Sound like a fascinating day? Just contact us and we’ll start making all the arrangements.

We’ll take a mid-morning coffee or tea break, and enjoy scenic views of the immense spaces surrounding us.
Continuing, we’ll move through the hills and woodlands and know it is not uncommon to spot several types of big cats during the day.

The afternoon will see us continuing to spot healthy numbers of wildebeests, hartebeests, waterbucks, and near the waters, plenty of crocodiles.
